19 Must Try Fredericksburg Restaurants

Soup and Taco

813 Caroline St. //+1 540-899-0969

Soup and Taco is one of my favorite places here because they serve the most authentic Mexican-style tacos in the area for a great price. Each order of tacos comes in two soft flour tortillas, sprinkled with Pepper Jack cheese, and topped with jalapeño crema.

Soup and Taco also serve two different soups each day; their famous tortilla soup and a homemade soup of the day that rotates throughout the week.

You can also order larger entrees, called platos fuertes. Options include a tortilla encrusted tilapia dish, chimichangas, chipotle shrimp enchiladas, green chicken enchiladas, carne asada, or a chicken molé dish (check out the photo below). To wash it all down, they feature ten different kinds of margaritas you can order along with your meal! They have such a great service as well.

Make sure to save room for dessert—the menu includes coconut flan, fried ice cream, and tres leches cake, among others.

Fahrenheit 132

318 William St. // +1 540-940-2614

Fahrenheit 132 is a chill spot with sidewalk seats and offers a unique dining experience. Locals flock here for choice steaks & seafood, plus craft co*cktails, wine & local beer. Inside, the place has a more upscale vibe. This is actually my family’s go-to spot for anniversary and birthday party celebrations.

The menu changes daily, as they feature dishes made from the freshest ingredients and take pride in sourcing local ingredients first.

Start your meal with an appetizer, like the Chesapeake-style crab cakes made with lump Maryland blue crab, Prince Edward Island mussels in a bourbon cream sauce, bacon-wrapped shrimp, or the filet mignon tartare.

For your meal, their butcher cuts include a NY strip, center-cut sirloins, a filet mignon, veal tomahawk, and even a prime Australian Kobe Cowboy. Intended for two people, this steak weighs in at nearly two pounds!

12 Best Fredericksburg Restaurants | Where to Eat in Fredericksburg, VA (3)

Every steak comes with the vegetable of the day and your choice of a side dish. Choices include rosemary mashed potatoes, sauteed garlic green beans, braised mushrooms, hand-cut fries, and more!

Look for their Delmonico rib eye. Pair it with the truffle mac and cheese and black-eyed peas for a guaranteed incredible meal.

Not in the mood for a steak? Other options include a New Zealand rack of lamb served over Indian-style rice and Chilean sea bass pan-seared and topped with lump blue crab meat, asparagus, and a beurre blanc sauce. On my next visit, I plan to try either the sous vide duck breast served with a spiced blackberry reduction. Or maybe I’ll jump for one of the seafood options, like the diver sea scallops or this whole lobster.

12 Best Fredericksburg Restaurants | Where to Eat in Fredericksburg, VA (4)

Also, make sure to stop in and take advantage of their happy hour. It runs 4-6:30 for patrons seated at the bar. Happy hour features include 1/2 priced specialty co*cktails, discounted appetizers, and serious discounts on wine by the glass. One of the tastiest happy hours that tops the list of the best Fredericksburg Restaurants!

Paradise Diner

260 Warrenton Rd. //+1 540-372-7585

Paradise Diner serves a mix of American, Greek, and authentic Italian food (one of the top Fredericksburg Restaurants). That might seem like a lot at once, but it works, and locals love it. This is my sister’s favorite place for a country-fried steak. And remember, we’re from Oklahoma—we know good country fried steaks!

The extensive menu at Paradise Diner changes regularly, but you can always expect to find Greek dishes such as their stuffed cabbage with lemon cream, Greek spaghetti, or moussaka.

On the more international side, look for rotating specials like the shrimp Creole, roasted pork with a pineapple cherry sauce, or a London broil topped with mushroom gravy. Other days, you might find eggplant Parmesan, lamb shank with Greek salad, crab cake sandwiches, or fried calamari. Keep coming back and you might be offered Porterhouse pork chops, roasted turkey breasts with stuffing and gravy, a fried oyster dinner, or even a broiled filet of salmon stuffed with crab meat.

12 Best Fredericksburg Restaurants | Where to Eat in Fredericksburg, VA (5)

Paradise Diner has a good service and also serves a full breakfast menu with choices including waffles, French toast, pumpkin hotcakes, breakfast sandwiches, and several types of omelets. Next time I go, I want to try the crab cake Benedict or the fried chicken and waffles.

Charlie’s Crab House

633 White Oak Rd. //+1 540-371-9988

Charlie’s Crab House has been family-owned and operated by the Bourne family for more than 20 years. Here, you’ll found the heaviest crabs for the best price, always perfectly cooked and impeccably spiced.

This is a great place to steam a bushel of crabs before hosting a cookout or crab boil at home.

12 Best Fredericksburg Restaurants | Where to Eat in Fredericksburg, VA (6)

Be aware that this is a seasonal restaurant. They operate from May to September, crab season. I recommend checking whether they’re open online before making the trip. Also, when they run out, they close down shop. So, if you’re planning a big party, pre-order or at least call ahead to make sure they have enough.

Charlie’s also regularly deals in other seafood, including oysters. Check their Facebook page (link above) to see what they have at the moment.

Gourmeltz

10013 Jefferson Davis Hwy. //+1 540-300-7001

Gourmeltz used to be a truck, but they got so popular they opened a brick-and-mortar spot. Another veteran-owned business, this Gourmeltz cranks out gourmet artisan melts featuringplenty of interesting twists on traditional grilled cheese. Options include the Southern cookout melt filled withhouse-smoked pulled pork w/house BBQ sauce, cheddar mac & cheese, caramelized onions, and sharp cheddar.

There’s also the fiesta burger melt with not one but two hamburger patties, applewood smoked bacon, avocado, pico de gallo, and pepper jack cheese. A feast for the taste buds.

These are just a few of their many options—there’s surely something here for every eater.

12 Best Fredericksburg Restaurants | Where to Eat in Fredericksburg, VA (7)

Gourmeltz also has a dozen beers on tap. They also served us these crispy fried duck wings that went perfectly with our drinks!

12 Best Fredericksburg Restaurants | Where to Eat in Fredericksburg, VA (8)

Military, veterans, police, and firefighters can get a 10% discount every day. Definitely tops the list of Fredericksburg Restaurants!

Strangeways Brewery

350 Lansdowne Rd. //+1 540-371-1776

Strangeway Brewery is the best place in Fredericksburg for beer lovers. They have a ton of brews on tap, including several unusual options of the sour variety.

12 Best Fredericksburg Restaurants | Where to Eat in Fredericksburg, VA (9)

You can often enjoy live music here. If you’re hungry, there’s typically a rotating selection of great food trucks to choose from. They’re also a dog-friendly establishment.

The Popcorn Bag

1219 Jefferson Davis Hwy. //+1 540-850-7707

Though not technically a restaurant, The Popcorn Bag is a fun little shop that serves about 60 flavors of popcorn.

You can mix flavors to create options like a loaded baked potato, chicken and waffles, sausage biscuits and gravy, coconut curry, one of the best pizza in the area, beer or buffalo wings and ranch. They even feature rotating seasonal flavors. My niece loves the black-tie—a mix of Oreo and marshmallow.

12 Best Fredericksburg Restaurants | Where to Eat in Fredericksburg, VA (10)

Definitely stop in and invent your own combination. Or, let the staff help you come up with suggestions for some of the most popular mixes. Their large bags make for great gifts as well.

Travel writer and owner of the blog. My work has been featured on Fodors, Eater.com, International Living, and Great Escape Publishing, among many others. My story? Nearly six years ago, I left my job at an Oklahoma City law firm and embarked on a journey around the world. At the time, I thought I would only be gone for 6 months, but the more I traveled, the longer my bucket list became. Flashpacker describes how I travel. Rather than traveling as the normal world wise backpacker and staying in hostel dorms, I prefer a more comfortable experience, and typically stay in private rooms, take Ubers instead of taxis, and now use asuitcase instead of a backpack. Foodie, on the other hand, describes one of the key reasons why I travel. I love to pick a central “base camp” and then explore the surrounding area, really immersing myself in the culture and interacting with the people, and enjoying and exploring the food of an area is an essential part of this experience.
