Delving into the ending of the Five Nights at Freddy's movie (2024)

Five Nights at Freddy's ending spoilers follow.

It's finally here: the Five Nights at Freddy's movie has been unleashed in cinemas after a long wait for fans.

The adaptation of the video game series centres on Mike Schmidt (Josh Hutcherson) who takes on the night-time security role at the shut-down Freddy Fazbear's Pizza when offered by career counsellor Steve Raglan (Matthew Lillard).

Mike thinks it'll be an easy gig that'll allow him to finally solve the mystery of who kidnapped his brother Garrett years before through the help of dream therapy. But he doesn't realise that his new job puts his sister Abby (Piper Rubio) in serious danger.

In the end, it all comes down to a classic character from the games, so if you're a newcomer to Five Nights to Freddy's, we're here to explain all.

Major spoilers ahead for Five Nights at Freddy's if you haven't seen the movie yet.

Five Nights at Freddy's ending explained: Who is William Afton?

During Mike's dream therapy, he keeps seeing five children in his dream recollection of the day Garrett was kidnapped. Mike thinks he saw who was driving the car, but he just can't remember their face.

Mike realises that Abby has been drawing his dream, including the five children, and she also has a weird connection with the animatronics at Freddy's. After being told about the five children who went missing years before by Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail), Mike works out that the animatronics are possessed by the children's spirits.

He hopes to use Abby's connection with the ghost children to find out who took Garrett, but they tell him it will come at a cost: they want Abby. During this dream, Mike is attacked by the animatronics, while Freddy kidnaps Abby.

Mike is rescued by Vanessa who reveals that she's always known the dark secret at Freddy's. The ghost children were kidnapped and killed by her father, William Afton, who used to dress up as the "yellow rabbit" at Freddy's (Spring Bonnie from the game) to lure the children away.

The ghost children, under the influence of Afton, want to make Abby "like them" by forcing her into an old animatronic suit – The Puppet from the games – which would kill her. Mike arrives in time to save Abby with the help of Vanessa, but he's soon facing off against Afton in the Spring Bonnie suit.

Afton, of course, is the one who kidnapped Garrett all those years ago (although Garrett isn't one of the ghost children) and, of course, Afton is Mike's career counsellor Steve Raglan.

Afton stabs Vanessa and orders the animatronics to kill Mike. However, Abby draws pictures of what Afton did to the children, reminding them what he did to them. They turn on him and the springlocks in Afton's suit start to close, stabbing him, before the animatronics drag him away.

"I always come back," he warns and game fans will know that's true. The ending twist is a nod to Springtrap who first appeared in Five Nights at Freddy's 3. As in the movie, Springtrap was created when Afton was trapped and killed inside his own Spring Bonnie suit while he was trying to escape the ghost children.

It's a nod to a potential sequel if Five Nights at Freddy's is a big enough hit as the ghost children are still trapped at Freddy's, watching Afton slowly dying inside the suit as the credits roll.

Five Nights at Freddy's is out now in cinemas and is also available to watch on Peaco*ck in the US.
