Tom and Jerry Project: 1940-1967
Guided Mouse-ille or… Science on a Wet Afternoon (1967)Right after O-Solar-Meow comes another sci-fi-based entry! Probably making up for the lack of them in the past, I assume.
At a space station in 2565 A.D, Jerry (again at a large space computer) orders his mouse-shaped robot to capture him a hunk of cheese. When the robo-mouse breaches security and alerts Tom, the latter sends after it a robot of his own (the robo-cat from the last one), which ends well for it as well as any one of Tom's own personal battles with Jerry. Eventually enough, Tom gets tired of the ineffectual results from his robot and decides to take care of matters head-on,…

The 1960s had not got off to the strongest of starts for the Tom and Jerry series, with the release of several underwhelming shorts under Gene Deitch. Following Deitch's departure from the series, the baton was passed on to animation veteran Chuck Jones, who helped to turn the series' fortunes around. Guided Mouse-ille or… Science on a Wet Afternoon was released towards the end of Jones's tenure, with Abe Levitow once again taking over directorial duties. I have strong memories of watching Guided Mouse-ille as it was often shown on TV when I was younger. It had, however, been quite some time since I had last seen it, and felt that it was overdue a re-watch. Therefore, I'm happy to…

There Will Come Soft Pains
The year is 2565, and the only mammals on Earth who haven't either been exterminated or enslaved by the machines in this completely mechanized nightmare techscape are Tom and Jerry, evidently immortal and continuing their millennia-long battle much as before - only now they have mechanical duplicates to do some of the work for them. This cartoon ends on a chilling note, as Jerry blows both Tom and himself literally back to the stone age, and their eternal conflict begins once again at the start of another history-spanning time loop. Wonder if Dave Lynch ever saw this.

How are Tom and Jerry still alive all these years later? And are we to glean from the ending that the've existed since the dawn of time? Is that why they never seem to be able to kill one another, because they're immortal beings trapped in an eternal cycle of violence?
Heavy, man. Heavy.

This was always onenof my faves growing up — I always love it when Tom & Jerry goes high concept, but the humor of them being centuries in the future and outsourcing the legwork of their eternal chase to robots will never not be funny to me. Forgot about that ending, quite the non-sequitur.

The space race clearly inspiring pop culture, and here they were visionary showing Tom and Jerry killing each other in some kind of online game in the future.
Okay, inevitably they end up actually killing each other. And damn, Tom and Jerry really are immortal... year 2565... damn...
