The North Carolina Forest Service is a team of professionals who provide forest protection, emergency response, resource management and environmental education to the residents and landowners of North Carolina through a variety of programs. The NC Forest Service provides services to the 100 counties in North Carolina.
The Region 2/ Piedmont Division Assistant Regional Forester-Fire Control reports directly to the Regional Forester. The position works with regional; district; & central office staff, agency cooperators, and Non-Governmental Organizations to deliver NCFS forest protection services and programs. The position is responsible for: the operational oversight and supervision of the NC Forest Service’s Stan Adams Training Facility; the planning, coordinating, organizing, and conducting of emergency response training programs for internal and external customers; the administration and review of forest protection and mitigation programs (i.e. Community Protection Plan/Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CPP/CWPP)) for the Piedmont Region; conducting internal training reviews (i.e., service forester and ranger training); acting as the regional subject matter expert in various emergency response program areas (i.e., smoke management, Remote Automated Weather Stations (RAWS) operation and maintenance, Incident Qualification System, Inner Agency Resource Ordering Capability (IQS, IROC), Fire Environment, and prescribed burning); and representing the NC Forest Service Piedmont Region on various internal and external committees or working groups. The position is encouraged and expected to participate on Regional and State Incident management teams and will have Regional operations/dispatch duties.
Occasional heavy lifting required. Environmental exposures are adverse weather, forest pests, hunters, intense heat, dust, and smoke. Work hours are typically 8-5, Mon-Fri. Some work functions require evening, holiday, and/or weekend work.
Residency required within 90 minutes commuting time from assigned duty station Duty Station Location: 3490 Big Woods Road, Chapel Hill, NC 27517.
Necessary Special Requirements: Must have, or be able to obtain within 30 days of hire, a valid NC Driver’s License. Working telephone required at residence.
NCFS is an Emergency Response Division – work schedule may require extended hours and/or possible emergency callback. Wildfire and disaster/emergency response require year round readiness 24/7. Overnight travel up to 18 continuous days may be required.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities / CompetenciesThe Knowledge, Skills and Abilities listed below, along with the Minimum Education and Experience requirements, are REQUIRED to qualify for this position. To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:
Experience planning and conducting specialized employee or public training programs or field activities.
Experience with wildland fire suppression strategies and tactics and applying those on initial attack, extended attack, and complex wildland fires.
Knowledge of state and federal guidelines or programs related to forest protection, wildland fire suppression standards, or other forestry programs.
Ability to gather and present technical and fiscal information effectively in oral and written form.
Ability to work in a team or group setting and to develop positive and effective working relationships with teams, employees, cooperators/partners, and public customers.
Experience planning, assigning, and reviewing the work of professional and technical forestry personnel.
Possess strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to positively influence both internal and external individuals or groups.
MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES:
Experience managing and maintaining budgets, or funds allocated for work-related programs.
Experience managing and supervising employees and conducting employee performance reviews and/or evaluations.
Experience protecting communities from wildfire to include assessments, planning, prescriptions, and mitigations.
Qualified in the Incident Command System as a DIVS, or Type 2 or Type 3 Command or General Staff position.
Minimum Education And Experience Requirements You may qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience, either through years of education or years of directly related experience, or a combination of both. Bachelor's degree in forestry from a Society of American Foresters (SAF) accredited institution and five years of related professional Forestry experience; or
Registered by the NC Board of Registration for Foresters and five years of related professional post registration Forestry experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special RequirementThose not registered at the time of hire must obtain registration as a Forester from the NC Board of Registration for Foresters within one year of employment.
